ZNP for Haiti: urgent action appeal to support the eartquake’s victims

On 18th January 2010 the Polish Teachers’ Union launched an action targeted at its members, science and education workers and all people of good will, whose aim is to raise money for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

„We are deeply moved by the scope of the tragedy which has provoked the largest earthquake known in Haiti for 240 years”, says Sławomir Broniarz, the ZNP president. „Even before the earthquake, we were in touch with a Haitian trade union - Centrale Autonome des Travailleurs Haitiens (CATH). Its general secretary, Fignolé St Cyr, asked us to commence cooperation between our unions. After the calamity, we tried to contact him but in vain. But today we have received a message from the general secretary, happily alive, writing that the country has been completely destroyed by the earthquake. Institutions including the CATH’s headquarters have virtually ceased to exist. He has confirmed problems with communication and an urgent need to help those who have survived the devastating earthquake. He has also suggested that any form of aid will be welcomed”.

„We are all well aware of the fact that Haiti is in need of considerable aid and support, i.e. medicines, water and food supplies as well as rescue and medical teams. As a trade union, we would like to join humanitarian aid actions that will enable the Haitians to rise up from the calamitous tragedy. Therefore, we urge all science and education workers to support Haiti earthquake relief efforts and to transfer donations to the ZNP Central Committee’s account”, declares the ZNP president. „The ZNP Central Committee will donate $10.000 to help Haiti earthquake victims”.

Money collection for Haiti run by the ZNP started 18th January and will last until 28th February 2010. Afterwards, the ZNP will transfer the money to the Polish Humanitarian Action.
